The famous Pazyryk Rug, the oldest known surviving sample of the ancient weavers' art, was discovered in the middle of this century during excavations by Russian archaeologists in the Scythian tombs of the Pazyryk Valley in Southern Siberia. Authoritatively dated to the fifth century BC, and now on display in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, this finely woven, wool rug was preserved in ice after grave robbers disturbed the tomb and allowed water penetration. Incredibly, the style of this weaver's knots, the beautiful natural colours and the design motifs can still be seen in the contemporary Persian rugs and carpets that add warmth and beauty to our homes today.
